Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about neuro‑systems hypnotherapy, sessions and what to expect.

General

What is hypnotherapy and how does it work?

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic process that uses hypnosis — a naturally occurring state of focused awareness and relaxation — to help you make changes in thoughts, feelings or behaviours. A trained practitioner guides you into a relaxed state using breathing, imagery or verbal repetition. You remain aware and in control at all times, but you become more open to positive suggestions and new associations. This receptive state can facilitate lasting change in patterns that are otherwise difficult to shift.

Is hypnosis safe?

When conducted by a qualified practitioner, hypnotherapy is considered a safe complementary therapy. You won’t lose control or divulge secrets — you simply experience a deeply relaxed focus. Hypnosis isn’t a substitute for medical or psychiatric care, and we always recommend that clients consult their doctor if they have underlying health concerns or serious mental illness. At Techgnosis, our protocol is evidence‑informed and operates within ethical boundaries.

Who can benefit from neuro‑systems hypnotherapy?

Many clients seek hypnotherapy for stress regulation, habit change (smoking, overeating, procrastination) and performance blocks such as confidence or creative flow. Research suggests hypnosis can also support pain management, ease symptoms of anxiety or phobias and help prepare for surgery or medical procedures. Techgnosis focuses on behavioural patterns, not medical diagnoses. We work best with motivated individuals ready to repattern subconscious loops.

What happens in the first session?

Your initial session begins with a consultation to clarify your goals, history and any concerns. The practitioner then guides you through a gentle induction — using breathwork, progressive relaxation or imagery — to help you access a focused, receptive state. In this state, you’ll explore memories or patterns, and receive tailored suggestions to rewrite unhelpful loops. You finish by gradually returning to alertness and reflecting on your experience. Many people describe the process as deeply calming and mentally refreshing.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Most people can experience some degree of hypnosis; it’s not about being weak‑minded or gullible. Responsiveness varies depending on openness, focus and comfort with the process. Highly motivated, creative individuals often respond well because they can imagine vividly and follow instructions. Those who resist or are sceptical may find it harder. Regardless, hypnosis requires your willingness to participate — you cannot be hypnotised against your will.

Is hypnotherapy effective for quitting smoking?

Evidence for hypnosis as a solo solution for smoking cessation is mixed: some small studies show promising short‑term results, while larger reviews suggest it performs similarly to other behavioural interventions. At Techgnosis we view hypnosis as one tool among many for repatterning habits. If you’re looking to quit smoking, we recommend combining hypnosis with proven methods such as counselling, nicotine replacement therapy or support groups to improve your odds and reinforce long‑term change.

Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes. In addition to our private studio in Salt Lake City’s 9th & 9th neighbourhood, we offer secure online sessions for clients who prefer to work from home or live outside the area. Virtual hypnotherapy follows the same process as in‑person work and can be just as effective when you have a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed.
